Mission Statement

Sieda Community Action, a private non-profit organization established July 7, 1965 as a Community Action Agency, serves 14 counties in Southeast Iowa. Sieda implements a range of programs designed to provide advocacy, access to supportive services, and service coordination. These programs strengthen families, promote child development, treat and prevent substance abuse and misuse, provide mental health counseling, and help individuals and families with basic needs. With the strong foundation Sieda provides, individuals are more likely to become self-reliant and contribute positively to their families and communities.

About This Cause

Sieda Community Action works with communities to secure opportunities for people in need through advocacy, counseling, education, partnerships, and supportive services. We are working toward a world of resilient citizens who are involved, self-reliant, and contribute positively to their families and communities. Sieda Community Action utilizes a multifaceted approach to eliminating and ameliorating the effects of poverty in our service area. This approach is based on the Aspen Institute’s Ascend model (Aspen Institute, 2015), and is founded on the core components: education, economic supports, health and well-being, and social capital. Education We believe a strong education foundation is the key to long-term success. There is significant correlation between educational attainment and poverty. Nationwide, only ten percent of those with a bachelor’s degree are poor while more than 30 percent of those with a high school diploma or less are poor (Aspen Institute, 2015). Sieda Community Action works to provide a strong early childhood education foundation through our Head Start preschool program, Parents as Teachers, Maternal and Infant Early Childhood Home Visiting program, and Prevention and Substance Abuse education. We have begun working with Cradle, College, Career in Wapello County to increase educational attainment among youth and adults in the Ottumwa community. Economic Supports We believe the basic needs of individuals and families must be met before they are able to focus their energy or assets on gaining the skills and resources to become self-sufficient. Economic supports provide an important scaffold for individuals as they work to move from poverty toward financial stability. Sieda Community Action provides economic support to families in our service area through programs like the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, the Tenant Based Rental Assistance program, SHARE, Seeds of Hope, and crisis services. Health and Well-Being We believe physical health and mental health have a major impact on a family’s ability to thrive. Adverse childhood experiences, substance use and abuse, physical and mental illness threaten families’ ability to be self-sufficient. Sieda Community Action addresses health and well-being through our Behavioral Health and Treatment Services programs, Head Start, Parents as Teachers, and Maternal and Infant Early Childhood Home Visitation program. Social Capital The Aspen Institute (2015) reports that social capital is a powerful component in programs which help move individuals and families out of poverty. Peer support, participation in community and faith-based organizations, school and workplace contacts, leadership and empowerment programs, and other social networks can all help families become self-sufficient. Sieda Community Action believes that establishing supportive networks is an important part of the work we do. Our Behavioral Health and Treatment Services programs, Seeds of Hope, Head Start, Parents as Teachers, Family Development and Self-Sufficiency, and Maternal and Infant Early Childhood Home Visitation program address families’ needs for social networks and support.
