Mission Statement

Deaf Missions exists to effectively communicate the Gospel of Jesus Christ with Deaf people. Deaf Missions translates the Word of God into American Sign Language, trains Deaf people to reach other Deaf people, and does personal work among Deaf communities around the world.

About This Cause

Since 1970, Deaf Missions has sought to transform Deaf communities by preparing and delivering Bible visuals, training Christians - both Deaf and hearing - to minister among Deaf people and provide a focal point for anyone interested in effective, culturally sensitive Christian evangelism among the Deaf. Deaf Missions is currently translating God’s Word into American Sign Language (ASL). The New Testament and portions of the Old Testament are already completed. Translation teams work together to produce a translation that is both accurate and understandable, and which is not dependent on English translations of the Bible. Deaf Missions’ translation of the Bible is called The Bible: ASL Version (ASLV). The translated books of the Bible feature skilled Deaf signers; on-screen chapter and verse index; and helpful graphics, notes, maps and illustrations. As technology improves, more recently completed books of the Bible will soon be available in high-definition, and will include special features, such as verse-by-verse selection. For Deaf people, reading spoken language is equivalent to reading a second language. ASL has its own unique rules, structure and grammar. Deaf Missions believes an accurate translation of the Bible into ASL is essential for Deaf people to understand God's Word. The ASLV will be the first ever completed translation of the Bible into ASL. After this project completion, translation teams will begin to work internationally, translating the Bible into each country's respective signed language. There are about 400 known signed languages in the world, and Deaf Missions seeks to start and complete a Bible translation project in each of those languages. Deaf Missions also trains Deaf people to minister among Deaf communities. This is done through the Deaf Missions Training Center (DMTC). Students of all ages come to Deaf Missions from all over the country for a two year program to learn how to be effective evangelists among Deaf communities. Classes are taught in ASL by Deaf instructors and cover various topics such as: the Gospels, Apologetics, Old Testament Survey, Pauline Epistles, and others. Students receive hands on experiences by visiting and ministering to churches around the area, as well as volunteering their time to help out as needed at Deaf Missions. Lastly, Deaf Missions reaches out to Deaf communities by in a variety of ways, Whether it is by teaching after school Bible classes at Iowa School for the Deaf, taking mission trips, or going to conferences, Deaf Missions seeks to reach every Deaf person for Christ. All in all, Deaf Missions is respected as a leader among ministries for Deaf people and it's outreach extends to more than 50 denominations.
