Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities (HFHQC) is empowered by God to bring people together to build and renovate homes, to revitalize our community and to restore hope.
About This Cause
With volunteer labor, in-kind donations, and discounted materials and services, Habitat homes in the Quad Cities cost an average of $172,000 each to construct. Homes are sold to pre-selected partner families with a down payment and no-interest mortgage, making home ownership affordable and obtainable for working low income families. Providing adequate shelter does more than put a roof over a family's head. It also provides stability and security for their children, which has been shown to improve their social, mental, physical, and emotional health, as well as academic performance. Home ownership also provides opportunities for wealth acquisition and the opportunity to build good credit. The benefits of home ownership do not end with the individual. Home-ownership also benefits communities. Homeowners who are invested in their neighborhood are more likely to maintain their properties, thereby improving neighborhoods and surrounding communities. These improvements help to stabilize neighborhoods. Affordable housing results in more available income to contribute to the growth of the local economy of a community. Habitat for Humanity not only makes home ownership a reality, but also educates and nurtures families to position them for long term success. Each family receives one on one mentoring throughout the program and beyond. Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity also have a positive impact. They will work alongside coworkers, meet other volunteers and partner families to make a tangible difference in their community. They learn skills, practice teamwork, and become more connected to the community. Habitat is a hand up, not a hand out. Affordable housing can actually break the cycle of generational poverty, which change the lives of a partner family and their children, forever.
