About This Cause

Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club is an emotional and social support community for all people impacted by cancer. Membership and participation is free of charge and are open to anyone impacted by any type of cancer throughout the entire cancer continuum. We serve not just the person with the diagnosis, but their friends, families and caregivers as well. Our services include evidence-based programs such as support groups, healthy lifestyle activities, educational lectures, and social activities and children and teen programs to ensure that no one faces cancer alone. Cancer takes a significant emotional toll on patients and their support networks during and after treatment. Research suggests that the stress associated with cancer has negative physical, psychosocial, and emotional consequences, thwarting attempts by the body to heal. A 2022 report found that people with cancer have an 85% higher suicide rate than the general population. Family members and caregivers also experience depression and anxiety related to a cancer diagnosis, yet most medical care focuses solely on the needs of the patient. A National Institute of Health study found that approximately 40% of cancer patient caregivers screen positive for depression. F, and for many, the high levels of psychological distress they experience while caring for a loved one do not diminish over time without intervention. Psychosocial needs persist long after active treatment ends. Even after remission, many patients live with the fear and anxiety of recurrence. Cancer survival often feels as life-altering as the diagnosis itself, requiring ongoing emotional support. People who lose a loved one to cancer face another level of grief that demands specialized care. The recently released 2025 Cancer in Iowa Report found that Iowa continues to have the second highest and fastest-growing rate of new cancers in the entire country. Locally, nearly 9,510 Scott County residents currently live with cancer. The report estimates 1,150 new cancer cases in Scott County this year, a figure higher than the state rate for new cancers. When factoring in family and friends directly or indirectly impacted by a cancer diagnosis, more than 25,000 Scott County residents experience the effects of cancer each year. Gilda’s Club programs coupled with quality medical care assures Quad City area residents have a truly comprehensive plan of care when learning to live with a cancer diagnosis. Since opening new satellite clubhouses at the MercyOne Genesis Cancer Care Center and UnityPoint Health Cancer Center, we have experienced a 388% increase in the number of individuals served. This growth highlights both the improved accessibility of our clubhouses and the rising demand for services that support the social and emotional well-being of cancer patients and their families. We also provide direct services to Clinton, IA and recently launched virtual services that are accessible across the entire state of Iowa and Illinois as well as outreach to physician’s offices, schools, and community partners.
