Mission Statement
Since opening in 1966, the MacNider Art Museum has provided many visual arts experiences for the people of North Iowa. The Museum serves a broad and diverse audience, which is concentrated in nine counties (aggregate population 150,000). It is the only accredited museum in the North Iowa region and serves both urban and rural communities with a population that is employed in industry, retail, agriculture, education, medical and professional services. Educational programming at the MacNider services the Clear Lake Regional Office AEA 267 that encompasses 24 public school districts and eight private schools. The geographic area that the Museum tries to reach is very large, as it serves over 100 communities. It is the only arts organization in the North Iowa area with a significant (national) permanent collection.
About This Cause
The Charles H. MacNider Art Museum is a non-profit, municipally owned institution conceived in 1964 and opened to the public in 1966 in Mason City, Iowa. Everything the Museum does is educational or aesthetic in nature, centering on working with objects of art. The MacNider Art Museum exhibits and interprets a permanent collection of American art, temporary art exhibitions, provides art classes for all ages, offers enriching arts programs, and maintains an in-house art library. The Museum is governed by a Board of Trustees and operated by a professional staff. It is linked in spirit and purpose with museums around the world as a keeper of the treasures, history and heritage of humankind. It is committed to the goals and standards set for museums and the museum profession by the American Association of Museums. Museum staff consists of seven full-time professionals. The MacNider offers to the North Iowa Community approximately 11,000 square feet of museum exhibition space, with additional studios for art classes and a lecture hall/conference facility.
