Mission Statement
We unlock the potential of African youth and adults by building and growing community-led organizations. These organizations lead local transformation through quality education, health, and community development initiatives.
About This Cause
Gender equity is at the heart of the African Education Program’s (AEP’s) mission to unlock the potential of youth and women through education, leadership, and holistic programs. Founded in 2004 by high school students determined to create lasting change, AEP has spent two decades working alongside local leaders in Zambia to dismantle the barriers that keep girls and women from accessing education, realizing their rights, and stepping into leadership. Our flagship Learning & Leadership Center in Kafue, Zambia, locally named the Amos Youth Centre (AYC), serves as a safe haven and springboard for over 5,000 youth and women annually. Here, girls and boys are empowered throughout their educational journey—from early literacy through university—through targeted programs that address the full ecosystem of gender inequality. We offer academic support, health and wellness, career mentorship, and life skills training. Our locally designed Reproductive Health Access Initiative (RHAI) empowers youth with the knowledge and tools to manage their health and stay in school, including youth with disabilities often left behind by traditional programming. Through our alumni network, we ensure that young women and men not only succeed academically, but also become change-makers within their communities—advocating for gender justice and mentoring the next generation through our holistic programs. The Entrepreneurship & Financial Literacy Program empowers youth and women with the right resources for economic mobility and community-led change. In recognition of the outsized role that women play at home and in their communities, the Women’s Business Training has been thoughtfully designed to train participants in the knowledge and resources needed to grow a business and achieve financial sustainability. Since 2021, 241 women have graduated from the program. AEP’s history reflects the core values including: community-driven action, leadership by women, and a firm belief in the power of education to transform lives. With over 70% of our current leadership and staff identifying as women, and many of our programs led by girls who once participated themselves, we are not just investing in girls—we are building systems where they lead. Together, we are working toward a world where every girl has the opportunity to thrive.
