About This Cause

Brief description of the organization and its purpose: Earthen Vessels Outreach is a 501©3 created in June, 2004 for the purpose of helping the surrounding communities in the near East End to better care for its’ children. In the fall of 2001, a door-to-door survey had been taken and from this assessment the primary need identified was helping the community to care for its’ children. In December of 2001, a partnership began with Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation - Cross-Trainers Program for Seeds of Hope Church to sponsor a children’s summer camp program during the summer of 2002. Just as we had canvassed the streets to assess the neighborhood, we now canvassed the streets to recruit children for the summer camp. During the first year, there were over 40 children who attended the camp for 5 days a week, 8:30-3:30 for 6 weeks. At the close of the camp, children’s programs were continued in the fall and throughout the next year. This camp has now been in existence for twelve consecutive years serving over 1200 children (3 of those years under the direction of Seeds of Hope Church, before EVO was incorporated). A vision emerged to form a faith-based non-profit from which to build strategic networks and partnerships not always available to local churches. Current Programs Earthen Vessels Outreach is engaged year round in delivering the following services to the community. • An After-School Program – academically serving 40 -50 children throughout each school year • A Summer Day Camp – (80+ children) academic in the morning; recreational in the afternoon for 6 weeks, 8 hours daily • The Visual and Performing Arts Initiative (serves 20 - 25 per year) Teaches 4th – high school young ladies dance step, craft, cooking and character development while reinforcing positive decision making. Quarterly presentations are scheduled throughout the Pittsburgh area. • A high school boys’ Basketball Team & A Middle School Basketball Team - (30 youth) that teaches youth development, teamwork and basketball skills. The young urban men develop social skills and the ability to work for a common goal. • The ELM Program (serves 5-10 youth per year) Employment is offered to the youth, Learning is a requirement and Mentoring follows. • Feeding the hungry- more than 24,000 meals will be served to children 18 and under during the 2014-2015 year free of charge. • EVO – During the summer of 2007, EVO purchased a property known as The Greater Pittsburgh Temple, (corner of Pacific and Friendship Ave.) for the purpose of developing a community recreation center for the racially diverse children, youth and families of the local neighborhoods. The preservation and restoration of this building will cost more than $1,000,000 to complete the remaining building. We believe the restoration of this building will help unify these diverse communities through volunteer help and ownership due to the programs provided by EVO. At present there is no place offering the type of services envisioned by EVO in the near East End (Bloomfield, Garfield, Lawrenceville, East Liberty and Friendship).
