Mission Statement

"To encourage and advance the understanding and appreciation of the arts and to help create an environment in which the arts and artists may flourish."

About This Cause

The Charles City Arts Council operates through the Charles City Arts Center (CCAC). The CCAC operates with one part-time director and one part-time assistant and one hour per week paid bookkeeper. Class instructors are paid through tuition. Additional jobs, duties and support are through volunteers. Volunteer positions include: front desk receptionists, building maintenance, gardeners, event planners, special event support, caterers, food servers and grant writers. The CCAC offers a rotating monthly exhibit of local and regional artists with opening receptions. Admission to the CCAC is always free and open to the public as are the opening receptions. This gives the community the opportunity to experience the arts as well as meet the artists. This also supports the artist, giving them a place to publicly show and sell their work. These exhibits are an important part of the Arts Council’s mission, to provide an environment that educates and encourages art appreciation and helps to sustain artists. The CCAC also offers an array of art-centered educational programming. Our monthly Kid’s Art Class has been successfully teaching children the joys of art for more than 10 years now. Currently, these classes are held 4 times a month with a different theme each month. Mediums include clay, painting, drawing, pastels, wax resist and more! We also offer art classes for youth and adults in various mediums and space to create through our Open Studio program. The most utilized space is the pottery room. We have 4 electric pottery wheels and an electric kiln, clay, glazes and a large amount of pottery tools. For a low monthly fee people can use all the supplies they need. We also have an advisor on hand who is available for advising at no additional cost. For the past 51 years the CCAC has also held our annual outdoor arts festival, Art-A-Fest. This festival fulfills an important role in the community and surrounding areas by supporting and celebrating local artists. Our goal is to make the arts accessible to all members of our community during this one-day, free event. Art-A-Fest includes original art for sale, live musical performances by local musicians and interactive art for children. The CCAC is the fiscal sponsor for the Town of Colors Mural Project. This great program has already brought eight beautiful murals to Charles City with more planned for this summer. Public Art is a proven route to long term economic health and vitality in communities. It increases property values, attracts tourism and enhances community cohesion. The services provided by the programs at the CCAC are both educational and life enhancing. The availability of these types of programs in rural communities are important and make a positive difference in quality of life and economic development.
