Mission Statement
Founded in 1880, the St. Louis Symphony is the nation’s second-oldest orchestra. Celebrating our 135th anniversary season, today’s STL Symphony annually serves upward of 300,000 individuals through over 120 orchestral concerts at historic Powell Hall and hundreds of free education and community outreach activities within a 125-mile radius of the City of St. Louis. In fact, for every one ticketed performance we present on stage, our musicians on average give back 2.5 free programs to the community.
About This Cause
Free outreach activities include our musicians’ residencies in classrooms through Symphony In Your School, their performances in hospitals and nursing homes through SymphonyCares, our partnership with more than 40 African American churches through IN UNISON®, and a variety of free community chamber concert series including Symphony In Your Neighborhood, On Stage at Powell Hall, and Symphony In Your College. These programs, and many more, enable our world-class musicians to share their love for music with all in our region. The orchestra also remains a vitally important cultural ambassador through frequent tours, recordings and weekly radio broadcasts – the latter of which can also be heard online, nationally and internationally. Regular stops at Carnegie Hall consistently earn accolades, including our 2013 appearance that was named one of the top ten classical concerts of the year by the New York Times. Orchestra recordings have been honored with six Grammy® Awards and 56 Grammy® nominations (31 more than The Beatles); our latest record released last May has been nominated for two 2015 Grammy® Awards, including “Best Classical Performance”. Today, as we celebrate a musical legacy well-over a century strong, audiences and critics alike continue to look to St. Louis’ hometown orchestra for leadership and insights into the future of classical music and the orchestral experience.
