About This Cause
Founded in 1974, Unicorn Theatre enhances the Kansas City community by developing and producing high-quality, thought provoking plays that have never been seen in the region. We illuminate social issues by shining a light on diversity and inclusive stories which include race, religion and gender identity. Unicorn creates opportunities for the advancement of emerging and established actors, directors, playwrights, designers, technicians and administrative staff. Unicorn Theatre is the only theatre in Kansas City committed to producing exclusively regional and World Premieres, introducing area audiences to new works by both emerging and established playwrights. Prominent regional premieres at Unicorn Theatre have included: The Clean House; Proof; Wit; How I Learned to Drive; Angels in America: Millennium Approaches; Angels in America: Perestroika; Hand to God; Glengarry Glen Ross; Tribes, The Brothers Size; Clybourne Park; My Name is Asher Lev; God of Carnage; Priscilla, Queen of the Dessert: The Musical; Vietgone; and Sweat. These are among the most important plays in the canon of contemporary American theatre. At the end of the 2019-2020 season, we will have produced 346 plays, including 15 Pulitzer Prize winners and 70 World Premieres. We enrich local audiences by constantly seeking out the best and newest works to bring to the Kansas City stage. Unicorn Theatre produces plays that tell diverse stories, stories that represent all members of our community. We elevate voices that have historically been silenced, especially the voices of women, nonwhite persons, LGBT persons, gender non-conforming persons, religious and ethnic minorities, and individuals with physical and mental illness and disability. Since the beginning of our 2015-2016 Annual Season, more than one-third of the playwrights represented by Unicorn plays have been women or gender non-conforming, and more than one-fourth have been non-white. Through nontraditional and colorblind casting, we help make the Kansas City arts community inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is not a response to the current political climate; we have been championing representation on our stage for decades. That commitment was recently honored by Actors' Equity Association, which bestowed the Kathryn V. Lamkey award upon Cynthia Levin, recognizing Unicorn Theatre for providing ongoing opportunities for underrepresented members in the Central Region.
