Mission Statement
The mission of The Women's Safe House is to provide safe shelter and support services for battered women and their dependent children and to empower women to make informed choices about their futures.
About This Cause
Founded in April 1977, The Women’s Safe House is St. Louis’ oldest, and with 50 beds, largest emergency domestic violence shelter. The Women’s Safe House (TWSH) offers a comprehensive approach, based on national best practices, to end violence against women and children. We are the only domestic violence shelter in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area that accepts young men up to the age of 18 to reside in the shelter with their mothers. We believe this is an important part of keeping the family unit intact. All children, including teenagers, are offered age-appropriate primary prevention activities to help the child overcome the devastating effects of witnessing domestic abuse. The basic needs of all women and children in shelter are met because we provide safe shelter, 3 meals and 2 snacks a day, personal hygiene items, clothing and on-site laundry. Our programs and services include: • 24-hour Crisis Intervention Hotline • Emergency Shelter and Resident Assistance • Children’s Residential Program • Adult Case Management • AfterCare Program • Community Education and Prevention • Support Groups and Individual Counseling/Coaching • Volunteer Programs • Advocacy Services • On-site Nurses • Referral Services to Community Resources In 2012, we expanded our Aftercare Program, a post-shelter program that provides one year of case management support plus emergency financial assistance to fragile families as they begin new, violence-free lives. During 2017, we served 461 women and children who utilized 12,108 bednights of service. We served 7,931 meals and snacks to our residents while in-shelter. We answered 2,975 calls to our 24-hour hotline and, unfortunately, had to turn away 1,151 women and their families because we were full.
