About This Cause
Education for Family members and caregiver of individuals with mental health conditions. Many of these programs were developed by our NAMI National Organization and are implemented locally by NAMI St. Louis. These programs provide information, education, and support to individuals who have a mental health condition, their families and loved ones, mental health providers and the community at large. This includes information about causes, treatments, medication, side-effects, how to access resources, and what recovery looks like. In order for recovery to take place their must first be an acceptance of mental illness. The more people know and understand about mental illness the less stigma and misunderstanding occur. Education is essential to reach acceptance. The educational programs, support groups, and their accompanying materials are an integral part of this equation. NAMI St. Louis offers the following programs on an on-going basis: • Family-to-Family: An 8-session program for families, partners and friends of individuals with mental illness. The course is designed to facilitate a better understanding of mental illness, increase coping skills and empower participants to become advocates for their family members. This program was designated as an evidence-based program by SAMHSA. • Basics: A 6-session program for parents and other family caregivers of children and adolescents who have either been diagnosed with a mental health condition or who are experiencing symptoms but have not yet been diagnosed. • In Our Own Voice: A 90-minute presentation for the general public to promote awareness of mental illness and the possibility of recovery. • Support Groups (Connection, Family, Basics, and Finding Help & Hope): Weekly or monthly support groups for people living with a mental health condition and for family members, partners and friends of individuals living with a mental illness. • Ending the Silence: A 90-minute presentation designed for middle and high school students, school staff, and parents or guardians of middle or high school aged youth. Audiences learn about the signs and symptoms of mental health conditions, how to recognize the early warning signs and the importance of acknowledging those warning signs. • Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training for law enforcement and first responders. This is a 40 hour program. The overarching objective of each program is to help raise awareness and understanding and to lessen the impact of stigma regarding mental health conditions. Each program has a standardized post evaluation tool that is utilized to determine usefulness and applicability of the information presented.
