Mission Statement

Our Mission: To preserve the earth’s biological diversity and secure the future of bird species and their natural environments through the three pillars of education, conservation, and rehabilitation

About This Cause

To fully address the complexities of the conservation of bird species, World Bird Sanctuary approaches the issues from three different directions. These “Pillars” of our responsibility to birds worldwide work seamlessly, and equally, in concert with one another to help us achieve our greater mission. REHABILITATION - Every year, the World Bird Sanctuary Raptor Hospital admits between 400 and 500 injured or orphaned raptor patients from around the Greater St. Louis Area. Our goal with these patients is always rehabilitation for release back to the wild. In addition to those patients, the Hospital is tasked with providing care to our invaluable collection of education and conservation birds. In some cases, these permanent residents represent species that are critically endangered, or even extinct in the wild. In fact, three of our individuals are the ONLY living representative of their species in the United States. The World Bird Sanctuary Raptor Hospital is critical to our overall mission CONSERVATION - World Bird Sanctuary participates in conservation projects both here in the United States and in other parts of the world, such as Europe, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Venezuela. World Bird Sanctuary's core competency, and largest contribution to avian conservation is captive breeding. WBS has successfully bred a number of endangered species, including the bald eagle, Andean condor, Egyptian vulture, peregrine falcon, and American barn owl. As a species recovers, like the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and barn owl have, we begin to phase them out of our captive breeding plan to devote our resources to more threatened species. Though our mission is global, as our name implies, we strive to maintain a balance between local and international projects in order to be good stewards of both our local communities and our planet as a whole. EDUCATION - World Bird Sanctuary provides outreach education programs designed to give members of our community the tools they need to use the earth's resources in a thoughtful and sustainable manner. Together with our trained Avian Ambassadors, our Naturalists give a variety of different education programs onsite at our sanctuary, at schools, libraries, state parks, and other event spaces to spread the message of our mission throughout our region, and around the United States. World Bird Sanctuary helps inspire others to care about birds of prey and their important roles in our ecosystems.
