Mission Statement
The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri provides lodging and supportive services to families of seriously ill or injured children who require medical care and treatment in Columbia, Missouri area medical centers.
About This Cause
The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Mid-Missouri is to provide a home away from home that serves and sustains families of children being treated at area hospitals and health-related facilities. We strive to establish the highest standard of quality, service, support and facilities to positively impact the health and well-being of children and their families. Many families travel far from home to get treatment for their seriously ill or injured children. Often, it can be a long time to be away from home, or divide a family. For children facing a serious medical crisis, nothing seems scarier than not having their mom and dad close by for love and support. Our Ronald McDonald House provides a “home-away-from-home” for families so they can stay close by their child at no cost. Our House is built on the simple idea that nothing else should matter when a family is focused on healing their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is sick or injured the love and support of family is critical. In 1974 Fred Hill, father of a child with leukemia and Philadelphia Eagles football player, along with his wife Fran, prompted the efforts of an NFL team, the local children’s hospital, the McDonald’s restaurant chain and the citizens of Philadelphia to build the first Ronald McDonald House, providing a place for families to stay while their children received medical treatment far from home. Friends of K.I.D.S., Inc. was established in 1981 by representatives of Neo-Fight, Candlelighters and local McDonald’s Owner/Operators to pursue the opening of a Ronald McDonald House in Columbia. After a fundraising drive, Columbia’s Ronald McDonald House opened on May 21, 1983 at the corner of Stadium and Monk Drive. In 1988 after serving 2,000 families, the Board of Directors began expansion plans for the House, increasing the number of bedrooms from 10 to 14. The Mid-Missouri Ronald McDonald House officially became Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Mid-Missouri in 1997, and Friends of K.I.D.S was dissolved. The University of Missouri Women’s & Children’s Hospital opened in 2010 at their current location on Keene Street, prompting RMHC-MM to excelerate efforts to build a new House within walking distance of the hospital. In 2012 construction began on the new Ronald McDonald House located at 3501 E. Lansing; the new House, which features 18 guest rooms all with private bath facilities, opened on October 30, 2013.
