Mission Statement

Literacy KC's mission is to advance literacy among the Kansas City metropolitan area through direct services, advocacy and collaboration. Our vision is literacy for all. Founded in 1985, Literacy KC has grown to become the premiere area agency focused solely on adult literacy instruction through evidence-based adult literacy programming. Literacy KC has touched thousands of adults reading at or below the basic level of literacy- meaning approximately fifth grade- throughout the Kansas City metro.

About This Cause

Literacy KC offers a welcoming community for adults and families to improve literacy skills and enhance quality of life. With support from volunteers, donors, partners, and the community at large, Literacy KC invests in Kansas City’s greatest asset – our people. Each term, staff, tutors, volunteers, and instructors build a collaborative learning environment where adult students expand their reading, writing, math, and digital skills. This personalized approach allows students to shape the instruction they receive and delivers a balanced curriculum, leading to improved literacy and life skills. Our Model: Literacy KC is revolutionizing the way adult literacy education is delivered: INSTRUCTOR LED: Qualified instructors teach relevant, responsive, and level-appropriate curriculum. TUTOR-DRIVEN: Trained volunteer tutors support the instructors and help meet individual student needs. STUDENT-CENTERED: Each student identifies academic and personal goals and instructors design lessons to help them meet these goals. Literacy KC offers classes in Adult Basic Education (ABE), High School Equivalency(HSE), English Language Learning (ELL), Workforce Development, Excel Adult High School, and Digital Literacy. Literacy KC’s Adult Basic Education & High School Equivalency program provides free, high-quality instruction so that no one is hindered by low literacy or a lack of education in pursuit of their civic, career, educational, and personal goals. Each class is led by a certified instructor who is supported by volunteer tutors. Literacy KC's English Language Learning classes (ELL) help students learn to communicate fluently and effectively in English. Using highly-individualized instruction, diagnostic assessment data, tutor support, and conversation labs, students gain the fundamental skills required to master the English language. Our English-Language Learning program instructs students in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking English. This program is tailored specifically towards our non-native English-speaking community members. The Literacy KC Workforce Development division is comprised of workforce and college preparation, integrated education training, and workforce education. The Workforce Development Division is committed to the holistic development of learners, providing programs and services that empower learners to achieve their workforce educational goals with reduced barriers. Excel Adult High School provides students the opportunity earn an accredited high school diploma and prepare for what comes next – whether that is college, a promotion at work, or a new career. Kansas City Public Library, Mid-Continent Public Library, and Literacy KC have joined together to bring this exciting program to the metro. The program is offered entirely online with 24/7 access, so even the busiest of students can obtain a high school diploma with the convenient anywhere, anytime web learning platform. At Literacy KC, we believe in the multifaceted nature of literacy. Technology usage, including computers, tablets and phones, is imperative in everyday life. Our Digital Literacy classes provide these skills and are open to the public who are 16+. The classes range in level, including basic, intermediate and advanced topics. Learn how to email, navigate the internet, use applications, master Google Workspace and more. We also offer specialized classes for online safety, finances, job searches/resumes and healthcare. Join us for these open-to-the-public, walk-in classes to learn new skills and practice the ones you already have. Bring your own device or access our on-site computers. Literacy KC is an Intermediary AmeriCorps VISTA Sponsoring Organization.
