Mission Statement
To provide, enhance, fund, market and support cultural events which bring the visual and the performance arts to the public in the Historic Northeast community. We create programs that beautify and increase the viability of the Historic Northeast. We inspire neighbors to infuse art into practical work and everyday living. We nurture appreciation of the arts within our own community.
About This Cause
Our programs: SummerDusk Brings a variety of local and regional musicians to the Neighborhood for a series of free family-friendly concerts every summer. Chalk Your Walk: Last year we distributed about 80 boxes of chalk to people in the neighborhood and had dozens of artworks submitted to our Facebook page. Community Gardening Saint John Gardens, located on St. John Avenue just west of Back Door Pottery, has transformed a vacant lot from an eyesore into a flourishing community garden. With more than two dozen raised garden beds, numerous "tire planters", and several fruit trees, the garden provides an opportunity for individuals and families to grow fresh vegitables while beautifying the neighborhood. In keeping with Northeast Arts' mission to "inspire neighbors to infuse art into practical work and everyday living", Saint John Gardens is a conscious effort to embody the idea of "Gardens As Art". Visitors to the garden will discover numerous scarecrows created from found materials, discarded tires transformed into functional and decorative elements, and the running joke of bedsteads demarcating the ends of individual garden beds. Established in 2006, Saint John Gardens has grown from a few raised beds in an empty lot into a fixture of the landscape in the Historic Northeast. Now 40 raised beds and 12 families growing food.
