Mission Statement
Learn Fresh strives to make learning fun and relevant for all students. We leverage relationships with iconic individuals and brands to create educational programs that help students develop fundamental academic skills and confidence in the learning process.
About This Cause
Learn Fresh is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that provides a fresh take on academic exploration through Student Centered Design. We target those students across the country who have historically performed at the lowest levels—particularly low-income students of color—and we recognize the enormous disparities that have perpetuated such trends. These students are more likely to attend under-performing and under-resourced schools, they are disciplined at alarmingly high and non-representative rates, and negative narratives about their abilities and character are portrayed in the media with great frequency. We see possibility in every student, and we aim to provide resources and support to these students and their educators so that they may have a better chance to succeed in the classroom, graduate from college, and pursue meaningful careers. Our primary project is NBA Math Hoops, a fast-paced basketball board game and Mobile App that allows students to learn fundamental math skills through direct engagement with real statistics of their favorite NBA and WNBA players. Now in our fifth year of programming, with NBA Math Hoops we seek to combat the achievement gap in mathematics for low income students and students of color in urban areas in the U.S. The NBA Math Hoops game engages 3rd-8th grade students with everything from basic arithmetic to coordinate geometry, percentages, and statistical analysis. The NBA Math Hoops curriculum is tied to Common Core State Standards and 21st Century Learning Skills, and it has been shown to improve students’ basic math skills, their understanding of statistics, and their interpersonal skills, driving them to collaborate more effectively with their peers. We leverage partnerships with NBA franchises, public school districts, after school providers, and local and national funders to create deeply impactful regional programs. Students play the Math Hoops board game on a weekly basis and learn about the mathematical concepts contained within the game of basketball through the Math Hoops curriculum. At the conclusion of each “season”, we host regional Championship Events that feature a student Math Hoops tournament, awards, and an exciting, culminating experience for all participating students. Since our founding in 2011, we have built an extensive network of programming across the country. Entering the 2019-20 school year, there are over 5,000 active Math Hoops sites in 35 cities around the country, and we will be serving approximately 100,000 students and on a weekly basis.
