Mission Statement
3Girls Theatre Company develops, promotes and presents new plays written by Bay Area women in their prime!
About This Cause
3Girls Theatre Company (3GT) is proud to be one of the very few theater companies in the nation that produce only plays by women playwrights. Less than a third of new plays produced annually by the American mainstream theater are written by women. 3GT seeks more than “gender parity” in theater: we have a vision of a world where stories told by women are heard onstage just as often as stories told by men. We founded 3GT in 2011 to put a stake into the ground for Bay Area women playwrights, particularly those with the joyful hearts of Girls, but the wit –and wisdom — that comes with a few extra years of life experience. Since then, 3GT has focused on developing a panel of vibrant women playwrights who bring maturity, passion and perspective to their work. We’ve also been privileged to attract a pool of associate artists and advisors -- of all ages and genders-- who share our vision. Together, the members of 3GT are committed to bringing plays by women to new audiences who reflect the uniqueness and diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area. Each year we aim to introduce a wider range of theater goers to the voices of women playwrights. To this end, we offer all of the performances in our Salon Reading Series and Annual New Works Festival free to the public, and we practice “radical hospitality” for all of our full productions. In addition to our performance season, we sponsor educational programs and outreach projects (such as GirlWrights, LezWritesBTQ!, 3GT Investigates and 3GT Innovators) that invite participation from our larger theater community. These programs develop new Bay Area playwrights, empower young woman and girls, and nurture LBTQ playwrights. We are honored that the Bay Area theater community has responded with enthusiasm to our work. In 2017, we received the prestigious Annette Lust Award, given annually by the SF Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle (SFBATCC) to ” a promising new theatrical talent or an organization that has demonstrated early in its existence the potential to have a significant impact on Bay Area theatre.” In 2016 and 2015, each of our full productions were honored as "recommended productions" by Theatre Bay Area, as well as with SFBATCC awards in overall and individual artist categories.
