Mission Statement

ASBI is building a business community partnering with business organizations companies and investors, collectively representing over 200,000 businesses across sectors and geographies, to advance solutions for a just sustainable stakeholder economy. Our mission is to inform, connect, and mobilize business leaders and investors to transform the public and private sectors.

About This Cause

The American Sustainable Business Institute (ASBI) is a coalition of business organizations and companies, business leaders and investors committed to advancing market solutions and policies that support a vibrant, just and sustainable economy. ASBI and its sister organization ASBC informs and engages business leaders, while educating decision makers and the media about opportunities and policies that can lead to a more just and sustainable economy. Founded in 2009, today, the organizations that have joined in this partnership represent over 200,000 businesses. These diverse business organizations cover the gamut of trade associations, local and state chambers of commerce, microenterprise, social enterprise, minority, cooperatives, green and sustainable business groups, local and community-rooted business, women business leaders, economic development organizations and investor and business incubators. ASBI is raising up the voice and power of business and working with a range of other stakeholders to have an impact on a range of issues to create jobs, grow business and build a healthy and sustainable US economy. ASBI provides the platform, strategies, education, training, and support systems to help business leaders become effective advocates. ASBI elevates the triple bottom line perspectives of our companies and business organization partners to counter the false claims that businesses care only about short-term profits, and that good policies can’t be enacted because they “kill jobs” or are “bad for business.” We bring this message to the business community itself, as well as to legislators in Washington DC, state legislatures, and city councils, and we elevate this message in the media. Indeed, the media are crucial in how businesses can effectively engage in politics today; when businesses speak out, the media pay attention. Similarly, legislators listen and use our business arguments as reasoning for why they support good policies; in these times, many politicians need these arguments as “cover.” ASBI members have important stories to tell.
