Mission Statement

LA Promise Fund is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preparing Los Angeles students for success in college, career, and life. Working through a network of high-performing, community-based schools and a portfolio of programs that reach students throughout the County, the Fund creates vibrant community hubs and partnerships that foster motivated, engaged, and directed students poised for academic, professional, and personal success.

About This Cause

LA Promise Fund is a unique hybrid, operating John Muir Middle School, Manual Arts Senior High School, West Adams Preparatory High School, LA’s Promise Charter Middle School #1, and LA’s Promise Charter High School #1, while also implementing high profile programs and engagement opportunities available to students and teachers across Los Angeles County. LAPF primarily serves the historically underserved, low-income community of South Los Angeles. LAPF has tiers of impact: concentrating resources at partner schools, while also serving as an intermediary for wide scale opportunities. Partner schools receive dedicated resources in after-school programming, college preparation, academic support for teachers, additional staff, and operations support. Current regional programs support young women, career readiness, teacher professional development, arts and nutrition. Our organization serves K-12 students located throughout Los Angeles County. We serve 90% youth and children and the remaining 10% is our services provided to their families. Nearly all of the students served at Partnership schools and across the County are African American and Latino and from households receiving Free & Reduced Lunch. The LA Promise Fund initially launched as the Center for Innovative Education (IE) in 2003, working with a 60-student cohort at Manual Arts Senior High School. In 2006, IE reincorporated itself as MLA Partners Schools and scaled up its operations to support the launch of West Adams Preparatory High School. MLA became the LAUSD-approved operator of both Manual Arts and West Adams in 2008. In 2011, MLA was awarded John Muir Middle School through LAUSD’s Public School Choice and changed its name to LA’s Promise. In 2012, LAUSD renewed its Memorandum of Understanding with LA’s Promise for another 5 years. We received approval from LACOE in 2016 to establish LA’s Promise Charter Middle School #1 and LA’s Promise Charter High School #1. In June 2016, LA’s Promise approved an Asset Purchase Agreement with the LA Fund, resulting in the formation of the LA Promise Fund.
