Mission Statement

Active Children Portland's mission is to empower students to lead healthy lives, succeed academically, and inspire positive community engagement by bridging gaps and transforming communities who have historically been marginalized.

About This Cause

Significant barriers exist in access to sports, mentorship, and equitable education. That impact is felt locally as reduced budgets in lower income schools result in larger class sizes and cuts to enrichment programs. Communities of color, specifically, Latino, Native American, and African American populations, have greater risk of health issues related to nutritional deficits, such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. By the numbers: 1 in 5 kids are on their own after school and lack quality mentors 30% of economically disadvantaged students won’t graduate on time Only 1 free sport + mentorship opportunity exists for every 2,438 kids in Portland Public School districts - that number decreases in other districts as the number of families living at or below the poverty level increases Over 230,000 kids in Oregon are on waiting lists for after-school programs Studies of Oregon 21st Century Learning Centers show after-school programs help keep kids safe, improve attendance, physical and mental well-being, behavior, and grades. Active Children Portland programs focus on developing the life skills that each child needs to succeed in school and beyond. This comprehensive approach to youth-development results in greater academic engagement, improved health and wellness, and increased interest in community involvement. Kids receive soccer, nutrition, creative writing, and service learning 4 days per week and 30 weeks a year; keeping at-risk children active, healthy, and engaged in a positive, safe, and stable after-school environment.
