About This Cause

PAINT YOUR HEART OUT, TAMPA! is a one day volunteer effort to paint the homes of the low income, elderly residents of Tampa. The idea for this program was borrowed from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and brought to Tampa in 1988. In September of that year, a fifty member Steering Committee was formed to organize the first Paint Day, which was to be held in the spring of 1989. PAINT YOUR HEART OUT, TAMPA! is a 501c3 status as a non for profit organization. Neither the committee nor the program receive any local, state, or federal funding, but rely solely on private contributions such as cash and in kind donations. In-kind donations include: paint, paintbrushes, rollers, scrapers, ladders, and just about everything you need to paint a house. The efforts add up to more than just a fresh coat of paint. The Steering Committee starts planning in August for Paint Day the following spring. Everything from the selection of homes to be painted, which follow federal guidelines is based on need, to organizing teams of volunteers who will be painting on Paint Day begins in the fall. These volunteers come from all walks of life: judges, doctors, secretaries, housewives, teachers, construction workers, presidents of corporations, etc. Teams are made up of civic and neighborhood groups, corporations, and city/governmental agencies. The next stage is sending out crews to perform quantity take-offs to determine what type and amount of paint is needed for each house, as well as allowing the homeowner to select his/her color of paint and trim color for their home. The committee then recruits professional painters to assist the inexperienced team of volunteers on paint day. Pressure washing the home comes next, with teams of professionals performing this task to prepare the homes for Paint Day. On Paint Day, 2,500 volunteers descend on Tampa neighborhoods to not only scrape and paint these homes, but also remove trash and debris, plant flowers, etc. Some teams even "adopt" their homeowner and provide services for them year round. Other teams build ramps for wheelchair residents, and paint garages. Although our program focuses on the outside of the home, some teams have bought furniture and provided for some needed repairs inside the home, such as replacing toilets, etc. Command Center are in touch with each team to see that everything runs smoothly during the event. These coordinators deliver more supplies, if needed and volunteers as well. After the work has been completed, all volunteers are invited to a free celebration event sponsored by the Steering Committee. There they can bring out their families to talk about that day and share the before and after photos of their home with others. The Steering Committee has worked to make this program a success each year by adding different dimensions to the program for the volunteers and the homeowners. To date over 3,300 homes has been painted, and on April 22, 2023 another 100 homes will be added to that list. There is always a waiting list of homes to be painted, as well as a long list of teams with volunteers who want their own homes to paint. Because of the tremendous success of this committee's efforts they have been able to "pass the paint brush" to other neighboring communities and cities. People from as far away as Louisiana and California have traveled to Tampa on Paint Day in hopes of starting the program in their own cities. The committee would like to see America painting its heart out over the next decade.
