Mission Statement
The Trellis Center’s mission is to help our participants improve their social, self-management, problem solving and communication skills through peer engagement and positive behavior supports, while participating in a variety of vocational, recreational and community activities. We strive to create opportunities where adults with developmental disabilities are understood, valued and given opportunities to grow individually as well as contribute to their community.
About This Cause
Gardening offers therapeutic benefits for both teens and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities such as: quiet fascination and stimuli reduction, the ability to follow multi step directions and tactile sensory integration. Our Garden- Based Learning program operates under the core principle that everyone deserves access to nature. Our indoor and outdoor garden spaces provide us with a stepping-off point for exploration. Through our hands-on activities, projects, and horticulture, we provide participants the opportunity to connect to the restorative influence of the natural world. Participants learn the complete process of seeding, growing, transplanting, maintaining, and harvesting various fruits, flowers and vegetables. Gardening activities enhance creativity, boosts self-esteem, and enable our participants to improve communication, pre-vocational, and creative thinking skills. Our services are tailored to meet the participants individual needs, interests and abilities. Our HS Transitional Program provides students from local high schools early work experience and post high school job preparedness training. Students participate in Life and Social, Job and Career, Agricultural, and Entrepreneurship skills programming. The Transitional Program explores every part of what it means to be a successfully employed adult; topics include but are not limited to good hygiene, proper attire, effective communication and appropriate social skills, following and giving directions, time management, healthy eating, maintaining a personal and professional budget, identifying strengths and weaknesses, thinking critically, and navigating the subtleties and off-script moments of a job interview. Participants leave the program with a resume, recommendation letter, and a hands-on assessment of their abilities along with the skills to be successful in an agricultural or community job and the experience to monetize their talents or interests as a supplementary and/or sustainable form of income. The program is tailored to each student’s ability level, skills, and interests. The program aims to assist the students in identifying their strengths and interests while exploring what post-high school jobs or careers appeal to them. Through this exploration, students are able to work towards a goal that is meaningful to them. Our Community support program focuses on the development and growth of skills promoting self determination, independence, self sufficiency, self-advocacy, socialization, and the adaptive skills necessary for successful integration into community settings. Our activities provide individuals with opportunities to develop personal relationships with others in their local communities and to learn, practice, and apply life skills that promote greater independence and community inclusion. We also provide opportunities for community building and engagement through Community Service, such as volunteering at local businesses, or attending other local community activities and events. All of these activities helps our participants grow social skills used to make community connections, encourages engagement with the community, and increases the mental and physical well-being of our participants.
