About This Cause
The Hope Project is at its heart a cross-cultural partnership. Liberia, the 4th poorest country in the world, experienced two devastating civil wars. Over 250,000 people were killed, many children were orphaned, and the country's infrastructure was destroyed. In 2003, a few families in the US who had adopted Liberian children orphaned by the war, founded The Hope Project. We began partnering with a community in Liberia by sending funds for food and medicine. Through this work, our Liberian partners communicated what they really longed for: educational opportunities. Groundwork began, we found a piece of land with old school buildings, leased it, and hired Liberian teachers. In 2008, The Hope Project opened the doors to Hope International School, to 400, pre-K through 8th grade, students in Gardnersville, Liberia. Through donors and grants, we were able to purchase the land and school buildings. Construction began in 2017 on a 3-story, 15-classroom school building and renovations will be completed in 2020. Our partnership works to empower and educate Liberia's next generation through our evolving programs: • Currently, over 1,000, pre-K through 12th grade, students receive tuition-free education. • Over 100 adults are pursuing an education through our night school. • Nearly 70 Liberian teachers, administrators and support staff are employed. • 11 university and 60 vocational students are receiving post-high school education. • Sew Much Hope, an on-site vocational tailoring certification program for students and community members. • A nurse provides medical care for students and their families. • A well supplies water for the surrounding community. All of this is possible through the generosity of our community of HOPE.
