Mission Statement

The San Francisco Mindfulness Foundation is a non-profit organization that offers workshops -- for the public and for healthcare practitioners -- that teach mindfulness practices that can be used to reduce suffering from anxiety, depression, addiction, stress overeating, and other problems interfere with optimal functioning and the enjoyment of life. Our goal is to give individuals and providers concrete tools that they can use to help them shift their relationship with whatever pain and suffering they might be experiencing. What is mindfulness? In short, it means paying attention, on purpose, in a particular way to the moment-to-moment changes that can be observed in the present moment. This practice helps individuals cultivate the ability to put some space between a thought or trigger and their automatic reaction to it. Mindfulness practices help people become less reactive, and make it possible to proceed in more skillful ways.

About This Cause

The San Francisco Mindfulness Foundation offers classes in Mindful Eating and Healthy Living, Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention, and introductory teachings in a variety of mindfulness practices such as sitting meditation, walking meditation, mindful movement, and mindful eating, to name a few. In addition, we have a special interest in reaching individuals who are suffering from addictive disorders of any kind and are looking for additional tools to strengthen their recovery. Our main teachers are Dr. Scott Lauzé, a board certified psychiatrist with 20+ years experience, and Dr. Steven Tierney who a clinical therapist and addiction specialist, as well as a Buddhist priest and scholar. Both Dr. Lauzé and Dr. Tierney have had certification training in MBRP and Mindful Eating and Healthy Living. We also have visiting teachers who add to our diversity and breadth of experience. The SFMF teaches a secular form of meditation that does not promote or discourage any spiritual or religious beliefs. Many of our workshops are based in Jon Kabat-Zinn's ground-breaking program in stress reduction which he developed at the University of Massachusetts. We also owe a debt of gratitude to the work of Dr. Alan Marlatt's group, in particular Dr. Sarah Bowen, at the University of Washington and their tireless work on understanding and preventing addiction relapse and harm reduction. Workshops are offered throughout the year, and tend to be 8 weeks long, 2 hours per week.
