Mission Statement

The REED Center is a Maryland-based nonprofit helping humanity reintegrate with thriving ecosystems. Through Research, Education, Experience, and Design, we develop regenerative agricultural systems that meet urgent human needs while restoring community and planetary health. Our mission is to reconnect people and land by promoting resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable stewardship.

About This Cause

The REED Center is a Maryland-based nonprofit helping humanity reintegrate with thriving ecosystems through regenerative agriculture, education, and community engagement. Our flagship initiative, the Morning View Food Forest, spans over 150 acres just outside Washington, DC, and serves as a living demonstration of climate-resilient, community-based land stewardship. It showcases how diversified, perennial food systems can restore degraded land, meet human needs, and create resilient, self-sustaining ecosystems. Our work includes: 1. **Experiential Education** – We offer hands-on training in food forest design, water retention, rapid soil regeneration, ecological business models, and other regenerative land practices—empowering people to steward land for long-term resilience. 2. **Ecological Restoration** – Each year, we plant thousands of native trees and shrubs through partnerships with nonprofits, farms, businesses, and community groups to regenerate landscapes and strengthen regional biodiversity. 3. **Volunteer Engagement** – We host frequent volunteer opportunities for individuals, schools, and corporate groups to learn, serve, and build community through shared ecological work. 4. **Outreach & Advocacy** – We provide educational programming to schools, universities, retirement communities, environmental coalitions, and civic organizations seeking to integrate ecological thinking into their culture and operations. 5. **Community-Building Events** – From retreats and concerts to outdoor film screenings and seasonal festivals, we create spaces for people to reconnect with land and each other. We’ve collaborated with the USDA’s NRCS on large-scale tree plantings, welcomed student service groups from the University of Connecticut’s HASB program, and co-led ecological education programs through William & Mary’s Institute for Integrative Conservation. Our work is supported in part by a grant from the Maryland Healthy Soils Program, recognizing our leadership in regenerative agriculture, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem restoration. Through partnerships like these, we are able to blend ecological restoration with education, Indigenous food sovereignty, and climate resilience. We welcome support in all forms—from volunteering and land partnerships to corporate giving and employee engagement. Learn more at [thereedcenter.org](https://thereedcenter.org).
