Mission Statement
Helping humanity reintegrate with thriving ecosystems by developing the most ecologically beneficial agricultural systems possible, meeting acute human needs while restoring community & planetary health. The REED Center is a Maryland-based nonprofit that seeks to repair the holistic connection of humans and their environment through Research, Education, Experience, and Design to promote the continuity, resilience and adaptability of thriving landscapes & communities.
About This Cause
The REED Center (TRC) is actively designing and building food forests around the world. This includes our flagship project on a 150+ acre farm called Morning View Food Forest (MVFF), located within one hour of Washington, DC. MVFF serves as a demonstration site for policy makers, farmers, and interested community members to see first-hand the potential of diversified, perennial food systems. By mimicking thriving ecosystems, we create self-perpetuating, resilient and abundant landscapes. TRC carries out its mission and vision through a wide array of activities including: 1) Offering experiential courses, such as edible forest design and management, water conservation and retention, rapid soil rebuilding, business development of profitable, regenerative models of agriculture and a wide variety of hands-on permaculture skills. 2) Planting thousands of trees annually by collaborating with other non-profits, businesses and community groups. 3) Creating frequent volunteer opportunities for individuals and small groups interested in hands-on learning that reshapes landscapes into abundant thriving ecosystems. 4) Providing educational outreach to schools, universities, retirement communities, environmental groups, and organizations interested in incorporating ecological thinking into their operations and cultures. 5) Developing community-building events, including retreats, concerts, movies, and classes that bring people together in a natural environment. As part of this bigger vison, we are currently exploring avenues to support farmers and land-owners who share this vision of transitioning their own land to these agro-ecological systems.
