Mission Statement

Boulder Food Rescue is a non-profit organization whose goal is to create a more just and less wasteful food system. We facilitate the sustainable redistribution of healthy food to agencies who serve homeless and low-income individuals while educating each other about food justice.

About This Cause

Today,1 in 6 people in the United States face food insecurity, a population that could easily be fed by the 40% of food wasted in this country. Other resources do exist to distribute this food, but they come with many prohibiting barriers, including transportation to food distribution sites, limited hours of operation at food banks, and shame and social stigma associated with accessing resources. Boulder Food Rescue seeks to eliminate these barriers by focusing on bringing food to people where they already are. We transport food directly to community rooms of low income housing facilities, daycares, and afterschool programs, allowing them to design a distribution system that works for them. Currently, we redistribute an average of 12 pickups each day from 20 food donors (with a focus on 9 major grocery stores and a local farmer’s market), seven days a week, delivering an average of 1,600 pounds of food daily to 45 recipient organizations by volunteers using bicycles and trailers.
