About This Cause
Many children in low-income communities lack access to a world-class education. Beta Academy's vision is an elite education for all children. Founder and CEO Latisha Andrews saw an urgent need for better public education otpions in an underserved community in Southeast Houston. With the support of local families who shared her vision and beleived in her leadership, Beta Academy was founded as a small private school and became a public charter school in Fall 2015. It has grown and thrived ever since. Beta is a shining example of positive growth in a grass roots school. Since opening in 2010 with just 33 scholars, the school has grown exponentially and now serves over 1,500 scholars with an additional 600 on a waiting list, highlighting the immense demand for the school's unique offerings. This growth is further reflected in the school's annual budget which has surged from a modest $30K a year to an impressive $14M. Such remarkable growth underscores Beta Academy's commitment to providing quality education and nurturing its scholars' potential, making it an inspiring success story in the field of education. Beta Academy serves a student body made up of 93% students of color, 72% students who are economically disadvantaged and 19% who are English learners. In spite of the many challenges they face, these scholars are excelling at Beta Academy, with test scores consistently above both local district and state scores.
