About This Cause

The mission of the Kinsella Arts Incorporated is to provide each student with an enriched educational environment, which fosters artistic, independent and critical thinking through performing arts integrated instruction. Established in 2012, Kinsella Arts, Inc. (KAI) was created out of concern that administrators and parents of KMSPA had regarding its ability to be able to continue to fulfill its mission in light of the education budget cuts that had been taking place in arts programs in other schools within the Hartford Public School District, and also in other school districts in the state. KMSPA is the only prekindergarten-grade 12 performing arts pathway in the country. KAI developed as a commitment to ensure the quality of education and the excellence of the arts integrated programming at KMSPA by providing funding and other necessities the school needs that are not, and most likely will not, be provided for in the education budget. In 2007, KMSPA was established as a performing arts magnet school in response to the Sheff vs. O’Neil desegregation case to close the academic achievement gap between suburban and urban education. KMSPA employs over 100 staff from diverse backgrounds, including highly qualified, certified teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators. All students are accepted for enrollment through a random lottery process completed by the Regional School Choice Office. Based on Hartford Public School’s grid for school improvement, Kinsella remains fully autonomous, the highest performing of the Hartford Public schools, explaining the 2,800 applications for approximately 150 available seats for the 2017-18 school year. Currently, there are over 910 public school students between the grades of PreK and grade 12 who are enrolled at KMSPA. Students come from over 49 zip codes including rural, suburban, and urban communities. Forty percent of the student body are from Hartford. Although 84.9% of our school qualifies for free lunch, all our students receive free lunch under the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). The diverse student body includes 39% of students who are Hispanic or Latino and speak Spanish, 34% who are Black or African American, and 25% of students who are Caucasian. The remaining 2% of the student population includes students who are listed as Native American, Asian or other. With support from philanthropic partners such as the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, the Classics for Kids Foundation, the New Alliance Foundation, The Greater Hartford Arts Council, The Fund for Greater Hartford, the Connecticut Office of the Arts and several others, KAI has provided multiple enrichment opportunities for the KMSPA community. These opportunities included college visits, college and career readiness workshops, donated musical instruments, Math & Movement programs for elementary students, sponsorship of visiting artists, an internship program for high school students at TheaterWorks in Hartford, and an ongoing Family Literacy quarterly evening program, which KAI considers its signature offering.
