About This Cause
BTC envisions a future where all students have the resources to reach their full potential, where every classroom is led by an engaging teacher committed to each student's success, and where society as a whole realizes the ultimate social and economic benefits of fully investing in its youth. Breakthrough utilizes youth development research to empower youth with tools to succeed. Research by Paul Tough (How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the Hidden Power of Character, 2012) informs the six “Breakthrough Codes for College Success,” listed below. These codes support a culture of academic excellence and nurture youth’s social emotional growth. 1. Relish Hard Work Together: Be passionate about learning and being together. When you face a complicated problem, “lean in together” to solve it. Know BTC is hard work and important for your future. Have fun! 2. Strive to Understand: Be patient. Listen. Respect other points of view. 3. Be Curious: Explore and learn new things. Ask/answer questions to deepen understanding of difficult topics. Actively strive to be an informed learner. 4. Live the Growth Mindset: Embrace challenging tasks and honest feedback. Know the only way to get better is through effort and practice. Failures are opportunities to grow and learn. Measure success in terms of growth over time. Compete with yourself. 5. Persist: Stick to a task until completion. Focus on work without getting distracted. Be self‐disciplined. Ask for help when you need it. 6. Be Grateful: Show your gratitude for the opportunity to be at BTC by helping make it a great experience for everyone.
