Mission Statement
Our mission is to enhance and promote the health, stability, and stewardship of coastal and marine resources in Northwest Florida.
About This Cause
The FLCC supports sea turtle conservation through the efforts of the St. Joseph Peninsula Turtle Patrol. It also focuses on conservation and education of other coastal wildlife, and habitat clean-up and restoration projects. Through focused environmental education efforts, the FLCC aims to provide current and future residents, visitors, and policy makers the information and resources necessary to both foster conservation and responsible land use and encourage economic development. We are a largely volunteer monitoring program for sea turtle nests on St. Joseph Peninsula in Gulf County, Florida. We patrol our 6 miles of beach daily during nesting season from May 1 to October 31 each year, identifying and marking sea turtles nests under permit from Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission’s Marine Turtle Program. In 2021, there were 218 sea turtle nests in our patrol area, which was the second highest total since our program began. Of those nests that hatched, over 5,000 hatchlings made it to the Gulf of Mexico waters to begin their life. In addition, our volunteers manage our Forgotten Coast Sea Turtle Center, providing education to visitors about sea turtles, land turtles and tortoises, as well as fresh water turtles. We have several resident turtles in our center, and all of the funds to run the center as well as to provide food, habitats, and medical care to our turtles are from donations and sales in our attached gift shop. We do receive county funds for running the turtle patrol program, however these are limited and the program that provides the money is time constrained and tethered to the beach nourishment projects on the peninsula. Therefore, they could be stopped after a certain number of years, which would make donations/gift shop sales our only sources of income for the nest monitoring and education center.
