About This Cause
Ecologists Without Borders (EcoWB) is a nonprofit that partners with communities hit hardest by environmental and climate crises—connecting them with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to protect and restore the ecosystems their lives depend on. EcoWB was founded in 2011 by three fisheries biologists from the Pacific Northwest who recognized that many communities confronting environmental challenges lacked access to the expertise needed to address them—expertise that existed, but was often inaccessible due to geography, cost, or institutional barriers. EcoWB bridges that gap by connecting global specialists with local communities—not as outside experts, but as project partners. Our network of more than 1,000 ecologists, environmental scientists, engineers, and other specialists works side by side with in-country partners to co-create practical, science-based solutions grounded in local knowledge. With a flexible model and a truly global reach, we’re free from the geographic or thematic restrictions that can slow larger organizations. That agility lets us respond quickly and cost-effectively to any community that calls on us—no matter the location, focus, or scale—and step in where others can’t. For many of the communities we work with, environmental decline is not an abstract issue—it is a daily crisis. Failing fisheries mean lost livelihoods. Deforestation strips away protection from floods and drought. Polluted water threatens health. Climate impacts deepen poverty and food insecurity. In these places, restoring ecosystems is inseparable from safeguarding lives and futures. By working together, we can help ensure that communities have what they need to protect their environment—and the lives it sustains—for generations to come.
