Mission Statement
The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity established to raise awareness, encourage early detection and to fund research of esophageal cancer in hopes of a cure.™
About This Cause
The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is raising awareness of the dangerous link between chronic heartburn and esophageal cancer. Esophageal adenocarcinoma is the fastest growing cancer in the United States, according to the National Cancer Institute. Since the 1970s, there has been over a 600% increase in diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Esophageal cancer is also one of the deadliest cancers as survival rates of esophageal cancer are extremely low. Many are unaware of the dangerous link between chronic heartburn and the increased risk of esophageal cancer. The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation strongly believes that education of risk factors associated with esophageal cancer will tremendously help to reduce the amount of esophageal cancer diagnosis and deaths. In order to save lives, we must encourage patients to recognize if they might be at risk of developing esophageal cancer and to be proactive and speak with their doctors regarding lifestyle changes to help lower their risk. Major risk factors include: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease which is also known as acid reflux disease of which chronic heartburn the most common symptom; obesity; poor nutrition; tobacco use; excessive alcohol use; Barrett’s esophagus. Esophageal cancer has more treatment options when it is caught at its earlier stages. Unfortunately, esophageal cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages. Symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing (dysplasia), often occur once the cancer has spread and reached an advanced stage and survival rates of esophageal cancer are extremely low. Despite this, there are NO standard or routine screenings to detect esophageal cancer in its earliest stages. Patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer often have few options available to fight the disease. The Salgi Esophageal Cancer Research Foundation is an advocate for standard and routine screening tests to diagnose esophageal cancer in its earliest stages. For those patients with a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer, we wish to empower them to insist on early screening tests which will save lives. Doctors must ask necessary questions of their patients in order to identify which patients are at risk of developing esophageal cancer. It is also imperative to improve current diagnosis tests and to find new methods in order to detect the tumors in their earliest stages. Lastly, esophageal cancer research is extremely underfunded! While rates have dropped for other cancer types, esophageal cancer rates are skyrocketing! There is a dire need for funding of esophageal cancer research. We believe that funding should be provided for innovative research projects which are aimed at improving current and discovering new diagnosis testing and treatment options. Combined with our other efforts in raising awareness and advocating for standard and routine early detection screenings, incidence and mortality rates will decrease.
