About This Cause

Please refer to our website: https://ncfares.org We are a 501(c)-3 charity established in August, 2012 as a Florida non-profit (C) corporation to support one served agency, the Nassau County Sheriff's Department and its Emergency Operations Center (EOC). A group of local amateur radio operators had been asked to volunteer, and now, after some 9 years, there are approximately 100 names on our list, all FCC licensed, of whom about 25 serve regular duty at the EOC. These 25 persons have been background checked by the Sheriff, including fingerprints, and these people have passed extensive coursework in Emergency Management typically offered to law enforcement and firefighters. May have passed numerous extra courses in Hazardous Management and similar-type courses designed to raise awareness of the staff. Each or the 25 hold a Nassau County (Volunteer) Photo ID issued by the Sheriff's Department, and a electronic key to the facilities. Our duty station consists of about 10 2-way radios, all but one of which require the operator to have a valid FCC Amateur Radio license. In this way, we have blended our self-taught ham radio skills with the communications needs of Nassau County. We believe ourselves to be the only such ham radio group in the US to be fully blended and immersed in a county sheriff's department. For revenue, we have had fund-raisers to include BBQ sales twice a year on the major highway through the area. We have also received individual donations, donations from Amazon, and donations from Exxon-Mobil. For expenses, they are primarily for radio equipment mounted outdoors on County or Governmental towers, but owned and operated by us, and used almost 100% for non-private communications. In the past, on two occasions, the official department equipment failed in the midst of a hurricane, and we successfully patched our gear in to replace. We have been commended for this, and received welcome notice from the Sheriff, including awards for outstanding service, etc. The equipment mentioned above is termed "Repeaters" and we have a number of systems in continuous, overlapping operation. We would welcome any inquiries, and financial support would be of course welcome as well. George E. Foss III Call Sign: N1PP Treasurer, NCARES, Inc.
