Mission Statement

US Ignite is a 501(c)(3) research organization accelerating the smart cities movement with more than 160 federal, municipal, industry and academic partners. For over 10 years, US Ignite has worked closely with DoD, Commerce, NSF and many other agencies, notably: NSF and Schmidt Futures supported $2.7M Project OVERCOME innovative broadband access program, Fort Carson Transportation Testbed with its CBRS network and the $100M Platforms for Advanced Wireless Research testbed. With existing support from each of the major cable companies, municipal and philanthropic support, our network of Smart Gigabit Communities benefit from technical assistance, capacity building and tools that aggregate financial resources to deploy emerging technology.

About This Cause

Innovation Zones - Communities are increasingly looking for ways to establish geographic regions where anchor institutions and companies collocate with startups to accelerate economic growth and innovation. US Ignite works with five communities to deliver a vision of technology-based economic development that will best support their economy following the pandemic. This model leverages a broad set of local government, academic, and private sector partners to target these new Federal resources. For example, US Ignite has worked with the City of Greensboro Innovation Center and other partners to access Federal funding targeting industries, such as aviation and advanced manufacturing. Broadband Deployment - While several Federal programs subsidize broadband build-outs and provide internet service subsidies, these grant programs are beyond the reach of many communities and smaller organizations. Black, Hispanic and Native American households disproportionately affected by years of underinvestment, adequate connectivity infrastructure is the heart of digital service delivery and represents a thrust of new Federal funding initiatives. US Ignite is developing innovative models of expanding connectivity for communities that are looking to increase internet adoption. In 2020, US Ignite and Altman Solon announced the results of a comprehensive study of municipally enabled broadband deployment in a new report: Broadband Models for Unserved and Underserved Communities. This report illustrates the growing support for hybrid public-private deployments and demonstrates evidence that hybrid solutions can offer a viable approach for some communities lacking sufficient broadband coverage. In 2021, US Ignite in partnership with NSF and Schmidt Futures, announced support for seven winning innovative proofs-of-concept to explore the viability of community-enabled broadband delivery models, including fiber, CBRS, and mmWave projects. Smart City Sensors and Data Dashboards - With US Ignite support, our partner communities create, design and deploy community supported sensor pilots with a focus on emergency response, localization services, traffic management, pedestrian safety, and STEAM education. These pilot projects also serve to help the leadership understand the role of data and technology and inform policy creation across eight communities. Adding capacity to this work, US Ignite works with communities to develop data dashboards that helps communities address smart infrastructure challenges. The dashboards use data from public & private data sources including both historical and real-time data from Federal agencies, cities, and industry. Challenges Competitions - Prize competitions that identify and highlight technology solutions that address community problem areas. With experience gained from hosting more than thirty competition events with communities since 2016, we partner with companies, like AWS and Facebook, along with Federal agencies to use challenges as a vehicle to engage innovators for further development of meaningful smart community applications and services. For example, US Ignite worked with the DC Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) and Verizon to host DCx, a Public Innovation Challenge for local developers to craft the future of public safety and public health technology leveraging Verizon 5G. US Ignite partners with local investors and industry partners to host innovation challenges in eight of our partner cities.
