Mission Statement

Urban Roots works with youth leaders to grow fresh food and build a community dedicated to achieving food equity.

About This Cause

Urban Roots provides paid internships to Austin youth, ages 14-23, to work on our two urban, sustainable farms in South and East Austin. Alongside staff and community volunteers, youth grow thousands of pounds of fresh produce annually and donate 50% of the harvest to our hunger relief partners across the Greater Austin Area. In 2023 alone, the team grew 91,704 servings of produce and donated 88,789 servings across 10 hunger relief agencies that provide direct service to those experiencing hunger or food insecurity. In each of our three programs, youth Interns develop essential life and job skills while growing food for the Austin community. Each year we hire approximately 100 youth Farm Interns not only to learn to grow food for themselves and their community, but to participate in a variety of workshops on sustainable agriculture, healthy lifestyles, life and job skills, and food justice issues, including providing hands-on service at hunger relief organizations. Through our dynamic and holistic program, Urban Roots youth Interns grow into some of Austin’s strongest leaders, advocating for a sustainable and healthy food system for all.
