Mission Statement
The Academy uses baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among youth living in Washington, D.C.’s underserved communities in Wards 7 and 8.
About This Cause
The Academy primarily serves 150 youth (“Scholar-Athletes”) ages 8-13 through its summer and after-school programming. Programming is rigorous, research-based, and diverse. It grants youth with opportunities to improve their physical fitness and academic performance while gaining exposure to new experiences throughout the year -- all free of cost to the child and their family. Beyond the core program, the Academy also provides 700 youth with additional baseball and softball opportunities through YBA PLAY, supports 100 families in building a culture of health through nutrition education and cooking workshops, and delivers personal finance curriculum to 30 families. The Academy’s work is crucial for the children of Wards 7 and 8. Poverty, low academic achievement, poor health, obesity, exposure to anti-social influences, and a lack of exposure to perspectives and influences outside of their immediate neighborhoods all contribute to limiting their opportunities for personal development and academic achievement. These systemic challenges are complex and profoundly hinder the youth’s potential to succeed in the long-term. The Academy directly addresses these intertwined issues by serving these youth in their own backyard from a state-of-the-art, nine-acre education and recreation campus in Ward 7’s Fort Dupont Park. The campus offers an enduring environment where the Scholar-Athletes can receive high quality, holistic youth and community development programming. The facility features an 18,000 sq. ft. education center complete with seven classrooms, a full teaching kitchen, and multi-purpose training / education space while the grounds include three baseball / softball diamonds and a teaching garden.
