Mission Statement
Warriors at Ease brings the power of yoga and meditation to military communities around the world through trainings, advocacy, programs and partnerships.
About This Cause
Warriors at Ease was established as a 501(c)(3) organization in 2011. The organization was founded by Robin Carnes, Karen Soltes, Colonel (ret) Pat Lillis, and Molly Birkholm. These pioneering co-founders were involved in some of the first clinical studies funded by the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) involving the use of yoga and meditation as an adjunct therapy for combat-related health conditions. In response to the success of these early studies at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as well as VA Medical Centers in Washington D.C. and Miami, the founders developed a teacher training curriculum to meet the growing demand for specially-trained instructors who have the knowledge and skills to share yoga in a way that is safe, effective, and relevant for warriors and their families. Warriors at Ease was able to reach over 12,000 individuals in 2019; teaching over 3,300 classes with a total attendance of over 20,600, provided 327 training scholarships, trained 188 teachers, and facilitated 4 veteran retreats. Warriors at Ease Program include: 1. TRAIN The Warriors at Ease trauma-sensitive, adaptive and evidence-based training is based on a curriculum and process that ensures teachers who are dedicated to serving the military community have the skills they need. Fully Certified Warriors at Ease teachers have completed the Level 2 training (upon application approval), demonstrate their abilities to expertly execute the Warriors at Ease protocol, and keep up necessary certification requirements (continuing edu., teaching hours, CPR certification, etc.) Through this program Warriors at Ease will raise the bar for yoga teacher requirements within the DoD, VHA and other military-oriented organizations and/or entities. Warriors at Ease offers a variety of training meant for yoga teachers, mental health professionals, service-members, veterans and their families. 2. TEACH In 2019, Warrior at Ease launched the new "Teach" Program. Through this program, Warrior at Ease has been able to expand the number of free classes offered to the military community, report on the number of classes/attendees, and financially supporting the Warriors at Ease teachers who teach these classes. Through this program Warriors at Ease seeks to: - Lower the barriers of entry to yoga - Increase the number of free wellness resources available - Support teachers, many of whom are veterans and/or military spouses. 3. RETREAT Manhattan College Retreats Warriors at Ease facilitates two retreats a year put on by Manhattan College for their student veterans. The purpose of these retreats is to arm these veterans with evidence-based techniques to assist in their health, healing and growth as they transition into the civilian world. Creativity & Community Retreats Warriors at Ease has the opportunity to host two retreats a year geared towards bridging the gap between the military and civilian communities. These retreats are completely funded by a single donor, to whom Warriors at Ease could no be more grateful. Warriors at Ease strives toward adding a fully-funded military spouses retreat by 2021. 4. TRANSFORM Warriors at Ease dedicated the second half of 2019 to create and implement the platforms, policies, and procedures necessary to conduct the organization's first full-scale program evaluation. We will use these insights to continually adapt our training and programs in order to best serve the military community. Train Program Provide instructorswith the knowledge and skills to effectively implement the WAE trauma-informed & adaptiveprotocols. Teach & Retreat Programs Provide students with space, practices ad experiences that assist in the health, healing and post-traumatic growth from both the visible and invisible effects of trauma, stress and pain.
