Mission Statement

Callisto's mission is to use technology to empower survivors of sexual violence.

About This Cause

Callisto is a national tech for good nonprofit that developed a cutting-edge platform to empower survivors of sexual violence. Our encrypted technology allows survivors to safely, securely, and confidentially find others who have been harmed by the same person without having to report or publicly disclose. This helps survivors process their experience and explore their options while increasing the likelihood that serial perpetrators will be held accountable. Over 21 MILLION people in the US and its territories with a .edu email address have FREE access to our platform. Our proprietary Matching System is the first and only tool that allows a survivor to learn if their abuser is a repeat offender without having to publicly identify themselves, report to authorities, or even identify the name of the abuser. While this idea may seem unimaginable, it is made possible by a new cryptographic technique called “privacy-enhancing technology” or “PET.” The Matching System enables survivors to enter unique identifiers (ex: social media handles, phone number, email address, etc.) of the perpetrator. If another survivor(s) enters the same unique identifier(s) there is a “match,” and a Legal Options Counselor (LOC) reaches out to all matched survivors, offering free and confidential assistance. Each survivor then decides their next steps. The LOCs can help connect matched survivors safely so they can take action together if they choose to do so. As we found during #MeToo, survivors are more likely to report, and to be believed, if they are not the only victim. We built this system because approximately 2.5 million college students in the U.S. experience rape or sexual assault each year. Those in racial, sexual, and gender minority groups are more likely to be victims of sexual assault. While the issue of campus sexual violence may seem insurmountable, multiple studies have found that the problem is largely one of serial perpetration. A staggering 90% of campus assaults are committed by serial offenders, averaging six offenses before graduation. However, less than 6% of student survivors report to Title IX or the police. If serial perpetrators were stopped after their second assault, rather than the average of six, campus communities would see a 59% reduction in instances of sexual assault. This is why Callisto's technology is vital. We empower survivors and rebuild their sense of agency while prioritizing privacy in a way that was never before possible. Callisto harnesses the power of connection and facilitates collective action, increasing the likelihood that survivors will come forward and perpetrators will be held accountable.
