Mission Statement

Gender Justice Nevada’s mission is to support transgender, intersex, and other sex/gender diverse adults, youth, and families.

About This Cause

Gender Justice Nevada is a statewide anti-violence and advocacy organization that champions healing, dignity, and justice for sex/gender diverse communities (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary, queer, intersex, asexual, 2-spirit persons of color, and other sex/gender diverse persons identifying outside of these communities). We provide clinical and educational services, and we push for changes in laws, policies, and attitudes that affect all Nevadans. It is our mission both to heal the wounds of persons who have been harmed and to transform the society that has perpetuated those harms. Every citizen of the Silver State should be able to live an authentic life free from the fear of harassment and violence, and we envision a future where self-determination is a fundamental right granted to all Nevadans, where a person’s gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation are respected as a matter of course. We are “Queer 2.0,” and we seek to stretch the bounds of equality as we demonstrate the value of honoring intersectional diversity. GJNV offers an array of services open to all survivors of sex/gender violence, oppression, or discrimination. Such persons are at increased risk of victimization in a variety of ways on a variety of fronts. Some traumas are overt, such as verbal, physical, or sexual abuse; others are more subtle, like discrimination in employment, health care, or housing. But both types of trauma cause long-lasting damage to a person’s physical, psychological, spiritual, and economic well-being. Our clients are significantly more likely than the general population to suffer PTSD-like symptoms, but for too many of these victims, a powerful component of healing—namely, being true to oneself in everyday situations—is unavailable. Living as outsiders in the dominant binary sex/gender system, they find themselves in multiple double binds that are inherently harmful, whether or not they are visible or can “pass.”
