The Sophia Way is a place of hope and change for women. We support them on their journey from homelessness to safe and stable living.
About This Cause
The Sophia Way is a place of hope and change for women. We support women on their journey from homelessness to safe and stable living. Women who come to the shelters are in survival mode. At Helen’s Place and Sophia’s Place, they find a warm, safe space to take a shower, sleep, eat nourishing food, and have access to resources. Following the guiding principles of trauma- informed care, case managers support women with their physical, mental, and financial well-being. We envision a community where every woman has a place to call home. Many of the women at The Sophia Way have immediate needs – “Where can I sleep tonight?” “Where can I eat?” “Where can I shower and wash my clothes?” “Where can I store my belongings safely”? Many have deep emotional scars from trauma or abusive relationships. Some are unable to work due to physical disability or social emotional issues. Our shelters – Helen’s Place and Sophia’s Place – offer women a warm, safe space to rest, heal and rebuild their lives. Caring staff and case managers focus on their overall wellbeing – physical, mental, and financial. They use the five guiding principles of trauma-informed care – safety, choice, collaboration, trustworthiness, and empowerment – to build a compassionate relationship with each woman. The focus is on “What may have happened to her?” instead of “What is wrong with her?”. This approach reduces further trauma and retraumatization, emphasizes healing and encourages them to develop stronger coping skills. We believe this approach helps women have a better quality of living and thrive. Our purpose is to make homelessness rare and brief. We envision a community where every woman has a place to call home.
