Mission Statement
The Huntsville Network for Urban School Renewal bridges community development and education research and practice to create thriving communities that help improve the social and academic outcomes of urban families and youth.
About This Cause
The Huntsville Network for Urban School Renewal, Inc. (HNUSR) is a social enterprise seeking to improve ultimately the educational outcomes for children, youth, and adults in north Huntsville communities by strengthening the community and economic infrastructure as part of an Opportunity Zone through investments in the HNUSR Harambee Opportunity Fund. In the Swahili language, Harambee means “all pull together”. As the national motto of Kenya, Harambee symbolizes a proud tradition of neighbor helping neighbor - communally lifting each other up. Therefore, HNUSR has dubbed its development as Harambee Village, which will be a sustainable and thriving community working together to achieve community uplift. HNUSR’s vision is to empower children, youth, and adults - socially, economically, and, ultimately, academically - who act as agents of change in their own lives and communities. In becoming a social enterprise, HNUSR changed its business model from what it saw as unsustainable, if it were to achieve the tremendous social mission of changing the targeted community, to one that is more sustainable. This business model is a market-based strategy that has proven successful for top revenue-generating nonprofits in Huntsville, but which no other nonprofits in Huntsville targeting services to low-income communities and individuals are using. In using this model, Opportunity Zone investment will be used to engage in community development for the targeted areas and as an entrepreneurial venture for the nonprofit.
