Mission Statement
Our mission is to provide the resources, progressive programs and community education needed to rehabilitate and re-home the abandoned and stray animals of Santa Paula. SPARC believes that all animals have value, no matter how broken or unwanted. With care, love and the appropriate medical attention, we have witnessed miraculous transformations. Countless cases of formerly abused pets or unhealthy strays, becoming beloved companions, inspire us every day.
About This Cause
SPARC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is the first No-kill animal shelter in Ventura County, approx. 60 miles West of Los Angeles. SPARC is a place where homeless animals are brought for humane care without risk of being killed due to lack of space, illness or injury. SPARC is actively saving lives by rehabilitating and re-homing animals, at the same time partnering with the community to provide resources and educate on the importance of spay/neuter and vaccination programs. To truly deliver on our No Kill mission, SPARC relies on generous contributions from other passionate animal lovers and advocates. As an open admission, No Kill, No Excuses, City shelter, Santa Paula’s larger, longer term mission is to create a system for other city shelters around the U.S. to copy to work towards their own No Kill goals. SPARC is currently developing that template in a practical way, serving the residents and animals of Santa Paula by providing a place for stray or unwanted animals to be cared for and re-homed. As a No Kill, No Excuses Shelter, every animal is given a second chance at life, unless a veterinarian says an animal is irredeemably suffering. As a City shelter, SPARC is required to take every animal surrendered to it from within the boundaries of the City of Santa Paula, so finding the right balance in caring for, marketing & promoting the animals and getting them adopted in a timely and responsible manner is crucial, as of course, space is limited. The other huge challenge- and major expense, as SPARC is truly No Kill, is that every sick or injured animal arriving at SPARC, must receive the best medical care possible to save them. Animals who would be euthanized at any other shelter, get every opportunity to live and be re-homed at SPARC. In 2017, from January to July, we have taken in over 160 kittens, due to the "kitten season" phenomenon. At most other shelters in Southern California, hundreds of unweaned kittens are received in the front door and taken immediately to the euthanasia room, due to lack of resources. At SPARC, we find foster homes or staff members to bottle feed the kittens, so they get their chance at life. Our resources are slim and we receive less than 10% of our annual budget of $1.4 million from the City. The balance must be raised through donations and grants. SPARC is always trying to raise medical funds for every animal as it arrives at the shelter sick or injured. Many cases are beyond our in-house medical facility’s capabilities, so animals have to be sent to outside veterinarians,. Medical bills in 2015 amounted to over $393K. Ideally, we'd like to have a medical fund of $100K at all times, but the reality is, that we have to raise funds for every sick or injured animal as they arrive at SPARC -- quite a challenge! We also recognize that pets are important members of the family to many pet-parents, especially the elderly, children and the homeless. People who may not have the resources to provide suitable veterinary care for their dog or cat and as a last resort, they bring them to the shelter to surrender them. SPARC tries to help those people who cannot afford to care for their pets when they're sick or injured, get the help they need to keep their pet at home, rather than surrendering to our shelter. The companionship that pets provide to their owners may be the only friendship in a person's life and we strive to help those in real need, to keep their best friend, if we can possibly do so. It's better for the animal and very important for the wellbeing of the pet owner. SPARC is attempting to change the status quo. By providing low cost spay/neuter and vaccinations to the public, we will impact the pet population in our area. By providing education, we hope to improve the quality of life for abused and neglected animals. Our mission is to improve the quality of life overall for animals and provide each and every one a second chance at a better life! SPARC has a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/santapaulaarc/) which gives a good overview of day-to-day activity at the shelter. Thank you for considering supporting the wonderful animals at SPARC!
