Mission Statement
Our vision is a revitalized community where every resident can use their talents and passions for the common good, where children grow into citizens who contribute to building and maintaining a vibrant neighborhood, and all residents are able to enjoy safety, good health, a culture that fosters life-long learning and satisfying lives.
About This Cause
The Asbury Community Development Corporation is a non-profit located on the Eastside of Flint, Michigan. Our primary focus is to empower the transformation of the community where we are located. We believe that transformation requires a connected, healthy community economically, physically, politically, and spiritually. Our Community Help Center serves Flint residents as a neighborhood center by hosting services that would otherwise require leaving the neighborhood for access. Asbury addresses food insecurity in our community by growing, distributing, and engaging our residents in the process. Asbury Farms is among the largest urban farms in the nation. Food is distributed to our residents through our community help center, the Asbury Cafe and Market, the South Flint Soup Kitchen, and our farmers' markets including our own mobile market. We engage our community by providing volunteer, paid work, and career opportunities, along with programs for youth and families. Asbury Farms is an ambitious undertaking based on the vision of turning once-blighted land into a buffet of fresh fruits and vegetables. Asbury Farms sits in the middle of a community facing substantial food insecurity. And as a result of lead that was present in the public water supply for over a year before it became public knowledge, daily nutrition for our residents is crucial for keeping the negative effects of lead poisoning dormant. Asbury Farms is the fruit of one of Asbury CDC’s key strategic goals — to be a center for health and wellness. In addition to moving our community from a food desert to an exporter of food, Asbury Farms also offers residents employment and a pathway towards creating employment for themselves. The Asbury Café and Market operates as a retail food market integrated with a café. We plan to be in full operation by the end of 2019 serving breakfast and lunch menu items that incorporate locally produced ingredients including produce from the Asbury Farm. We are currently seeking a site that will support both our near and longer-term requirements. Our approach to sustainability is to utilize funding from diverse sources as investment capital. These funds are invested into assets and capacity that results in efficient and effective operations that are economically sustainable. Our primary investments include the purchase of vacant land within the community we serve, year-round growing structures called hoop houses, soil amendment materials, the equipment and tools necessary to support farm operations, and soon, a new campus that will include a building for the Asbury Café and Market. Our goal for 2021 is to provide 100,000 meals. And to ensure that 20,000 of these meals are homegrown right here in our community.
