Mission Statement

Created by and for New Yorkers, Governors Island is a world unto itself, unique and filled with possibility... Just a short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn is a green oasis surrounded by open air, sea and sky. Brimming with history and a spirit of discovery, this ‘Jewel of the Harbor’ is NYC’s shared space for play, relaxation and nature. With expanded public access, new parks and infrastructure, and increasing tenancy, the Island is at the cusp of its transformation from a moribund former military base to a vital piece of NYC’s cultural and recreational life and a model for best-in-class environmental practices.

About This Cause

Mission: The Friends of Governors Island is an independent nonprofit that works to ensure the Island’s continued growth and accessibility as a vibrant public resource. As the designated fundraising partner of the Trust for Governors Island and the National Park Service, the Friends stewards the Island’s green spaces, enhances the visitor experience and builds a community dedicated to the Island’s future. The Friends invites you to lend your voice, time and financial contributions to ensure that Governors Island remains a vibrant public resource. History: The Friends of Governors Island was founded in 1995 to advocate for the return of Governors Island to the people of New York. Our proposal to redevelop the former military base as a great civic space was the basis for the 2003 transfer of the Island from the Federal Government to New York and the National Park Service. Since that time, we have worked collaboratively with the public and private sectors to build the Island’s community of engaged supporters and advocates. Priorities: Our goal is to ensure that Governors Island is a vibrant shared space for all. Every year, we engage thousands of community members to make the Island their own. Together we are... Strengthening NYC: Preserving Governors Island as a haven for all New Yorkers. 72% of our 750,000 annual visitors hail from the five boroughs, with no more than 2% from any one zip code. Remarkably diverse residents come to enjoy over 100 acres of parkland and hundreds of free arts, cultural and recreational activities. Our visitor service programs welcome and inform guests, while at the same time providing a formative work experience to public high school student interns. Community Building: Giving companies and individuals tailored, hands-on experiences in a natural oasis where their contributions produce an immediate impact. With limited financial resources for horticultural maintenance, we rely on volunteers to keep the Island’s landscapes lush and welcoming for all. Volunteer teams contribute over 10,000 hours of service annually and help ensure that the Island remains at the leading edge of environmentally sustainable practices. Advocating for Public Access: Ensuring that Governors Island continues to grow as a model for open space, historic preservation, and mixed-use, sustainable development. We serve as champions on issues that impact the Island. We work to increase public access, encourage responsible development, improve amenities, and limit activities that deter visitor enjoyment of the Island. We cultivate ambassadors who promote Governors Island to a broad audience of New Yorkers.
