Mission Statement

Capital Clubhouse’s vision is that people recovering from mental illness in the Greater Washington area achieve their full potential and are respected as coworkers, students and friends.

About This Cause

Capital Clubhouse Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization located in Washington DC to offer people whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness the opportunity to recover meaningful and productive lives. The Clubhouse approach was first developed in New York City in 1948; Clubhouses are now flourishing in more than 300 locations in the U.S. and around the world. Clubhouses operate on proven standards – the International Standards for Clubhouse Programs – which are rigorously reviewed by the world-wide Clubhouse community, of which Capital Clubhouse is an accredited member. The Clubhouse model was listed in SAMHSA’s U.S. Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices for its positive effect on employment, quality of life and recovery from mental illness. The international Clubhouse program has also been awarded the prestigious Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize, as “a beacon of hope for those living with mental illness who are too often consigned to lives of homelessness, imprisonment, social stigma and isolation.” Despite Clubhouses’ global presence, the Nation’s Capital did not have a Clubhouse among its mental health facilities. A steering committee of DC residents began working in 2013 to develop Capital Clubhouse. Volunteers steadily built the organization’s structure, funding base, and partnerships and in 2019 Capital Clubhouse was certified by the DC Department of Behavioral Health, officially opening its doors. The overall goals of the Capital Clubhouse are to help its members achieve their full potential and rejoin the worlds of friendships, family, meaningful work and education, in the process gaining access to all the services and support they need. Members participate in their own recovery by working in an empowering partnership with staff, building on their strengths. The focus is strictly non-medical/clinical; the emphasis is on what members can and wish to do – not on diagnosis or disability. Capital Clubhouse is built around the concept of a “work-ordered” day, in which Clubhouse activities parallel the business hours of the working community, and members and staff share all tasks, with members in the process gaining valuable work skills Work activities include administrative, kitchen, employment and other duties. In particular, Capital Clubhouse staff and members are building the organization’s capacity to offer opportunities to return to paid employment through real jobs in the community. The Capital Clubhouse employment program is to encompass Transitional Employment, Supported Employment and Independent Employment, with each including a measure of support from Clubhouse staff and members. Members are also offered hands-on assistance with their vocational and educational goals, and assistance in accessing services. In summary, the guaranteed rights of membership in Capital Clubhouse are a right to a place to come; a right to meaningful work; a right to meaningful relationships; and a right to a place to return.
