Mission Statement

LaGonave Haiti Partners has worked for over 30 years on the island of LaGonave, Haiti in the areas of education, healthcare and economic development. We are an all-volunteer organization.

About This Cause

The organization’s focus is on Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the world with 80+ per cent of the people living in poverty – and specifically on La Gonave, known as the island that the rest of Haiti has forgotten. La Gonave, some 38 miles long, is thought to be home to over 100,000 residents nearly all of whom lack electricity, plumbing and ready access to healthcare and clean water. It is estimated that the employment rate on the island is under 10%. The only true cash crop on the island is charcoal, a major cause of ongoing deforestation. Government services, minimal throughout the country, are virtually absent on the island. LaGonave Haiti Partners is committed to respond effectively to the needs, interests and assets of the people who live on the island by listening and working in tandem with those we serve. The organization is committed to building the human infrastructure on the island and, as such, only employs Haitians. In addition, the organization seeks to partner with other NGOs operating in the country and on the island to avoid duplication, to leverage resources and to share best practices. Historically, medical service has been tied to a single clinic and community healthcare workers living in 21 communities. Because transportation is difficult and/or expensive, clinic utilization has been poor. Over the past few years, the partnership initiative has been to take medical care to the communities through mobile medical clinics and prenatal clinics. This approach has been exceptionally successful, increasing the number of people served by a factor of 7, with little incremental expense. The partnership has collaborated with Vitamin Angels (for free prenatal vitamins), the Wesleyan Hospital (for access to vaccines and birth control), the Ministry of Health and Midwives for Haiti to build a strong program. The partnership supports ten primary schools and one secondary school providing funds for teacher salaries, textbooks and supplies. A key goal is to extend secondary education to all students. The basic path to economic self-sufficiency requires education and economic opportunity. Historically, the primary program offered by the partnership has been a goat program which involved training in animal husbandry, the gift of a pregnant doe and access to breeding stock and veterinary services.
