Mission Statement
To increase access to effective medical care for those suffering from diabesity by advancing the science of metabolism
About This Cause
By 2020, over 60% of all adults in America will be at risk for or suffer from type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes or obesity, which are related to many of the leading causes of preventable death. That is the “diabesity epidemic.” Until now, it has been popular opinion that the problem can be controlled with diet and exercise, but today’s science illustrates that the real problem for most people is metabolic dysfunction—which is a medical condition, not a behavioral issue. The Diabesity Institute (DI) is the only non-profit, 501c3 organization focused on the science of the metabolic system and its fundamental role in type 2 diabetes and obesity. DI’s goal is to create a “virtuous cycle” of increased access to effective medical care, where DI programs reinforce each other: • Engage with the general public to elevate awareness and develop demand for effective medical care. While our results in this area have been more promising than expected, we see the risk of a backlash because of a current lack of supply of effective medical professionals. • Educate medical professionals to promote awareness and create a supply of effective medical care. Our work in this area is key for achieving our long-term goal of strong demand matched to appropriate supply of effective medical treatment for diabesity. Demonstrating strong demand through our public education program is a key aspect of encouraging medical professionals to participate in appropriate education and training. • Develop incontrovertible scientific evidence on the impact of medical treatment for diabesity based on existing resources, data, and targeted primary research. Our research program, by providing the evidence base analysis demonstrating responsiveness in the majority of patients, informs both medical professionals and the general public on the safety, effectiveness, and credibility of medical care for diabesity. Our programs promote demand for, ensure supply of, and provide scientific evidence on effective medical treatment for diabesity. Each program contributes to create an impact that is greater than the sum of its parts, and helps achieve our goal of increasing access to effective science-based medical care for those suffering from or at risk for diabesity. The Diabesity Institute was founded in 2012 by Emily Cooper, M.D., a Seattle-based physician who is board certified in Obesity Medicine, Family Medicine, and Sports Medicine. While treating patients for two decades, Dr. Cooper developed an innovative, science-based diagnostic and treatment approach for patients to analyze the metabolic system, identify metabolic dysfunction, and guide effective treatment.
