About This Cause
Today, 2.5 billion people have uncorrected vision impairments, which can be solved with a pair of eyeglasses. Of that, 1.1 billion have presbyopia— which a pair of reading glasses can solve instantly. Five hundred million of these individuals live in less developed countries and lack access to basic vision services and eyeglasses. Some are not even aware of the benefits of wearing eyeglasses. RestoringVision works to address the unmet need for eyeglasses for people living in poverty who have vision impairments, live in communities lacking access to eyeglasses, and have no available income to afford them. Eyeglasses restore not only a person's vision but their ability to increase productivity, continue working, earning an income, learning, and performing daily tasks. In some low-income countries, aging parents or grandparents keep children home from school to be their eyes, hindering educational opportunities leading to multi-generational ripple effects. Individuals living in poverty do not bear this loss alone. The global economy loses $272 billion annually from lost productivity among adults who need eyeglasses. And eyeglasses can correct 49% of the worldwide burden of visual impairment and are the simplest solution to solve one of the most overlooked and growing global health crises. Unfortunately, most individuals in poor and low-income communities across the globe face barriers in accessing this life-changing tool due to lack of eyeglass distribution channels in their communities, no discretionary income to afford a pair or, both. Our work focuses primarily on addressing near vision loss (presbyopia) and the delivery of reading glasses. More recently, we've added smaller volumes of single vision minus eyeglasses to address nearsightedness (myopia). Today, RestoringVision is a nonprofit leader in providing vision screenings and new, high quality eyeglasses to people living in poverty at scale, at no cost to the beneficiary to combat this often-overlooked health crisis. Our progrmas reach millions of people each year with the eyeglasses they need. In doing so, they may increase productivity, sustain livelihoods, and remain productive members of society. We have dedicated our nearly two decades of work to remove the barriers to deliver this readily available, life-changing tool to people living in poverty each year. To date, we have reached over 18 million people in 136 countries with eyeglasses.
